Introduction John

Postby Saintspader » July 31st, 2010, 1:12 pm

Hey guys, I'm 17 years old and I'm currently a highschool senior. I'm looking to join the military but I cannot decide which path to take. Rangers seems like an appropriate option.

I'm looking forward to learning more about rangers here and I'll hope to make my decision soon.

As a senior, you have some time to think. We'd rather you enter the military "knowing" you want to be a cook than "thinking" you want to be a Ranger. Don't take it personally, it's better for your sake and that of those you would be fight alongside.

Tell us, why do you think that the Rangers is an "appropriate" option?

Ranger RangerX, I personally think it'd be appropriate because my end goal is SF. While this is far away, ranger school would help prepare for that. I'd like to become a ranger, and fight with the rangers, it's just something I'm not sure I want 100% yet. What I've decided is to try to become an EOD with option 40. This I want 100%. Its not that I don't want to be a ranger, its that I want to be EOD just the same. Its like deciding between a Ferrari and a lambo. Both are great, but which do I want more?

I understand what your saying about if you don't want it 110%, then don't do it because I'd be holding someone else back. Thats why I won't enlist straight as a ranger unless I'm sure of it. I personally feel like I don't know enough at the moment to make my decision about rangers. Everyone says they are completely badass, and totally awesome, but why is what I ask? When I figure this out, I'll know my decision.

I hope this seems reasonable and understandable to others, I don't want to seem like something I'm not.

X2

I'd also be interested in seeing him capitalize Ranger and not refer to the Rangers and Vets on this site as "guys".

Just sayin'.

Ranger RangerX, I understand what your saying, I shouldn't go in if I'm not 110%, because then a fellow solider won't get his spot and I won't be trying as hard as I should. I understand this, and whats why I'm still on the edge. I believe its an appropriate way to go for me, since my end goal is SF. While its a long way away, its the reason I'm join the army.

To be honest, I want to go as EOD with option 40. This would be my dream come true, but I don't know how that can play out. So with that said, if EOD is available when I need it, then I'll go as a ranger. Why not go as a ranger? Do I not want it as bad? No. I just want both equally. Its like picking between a ferrai and a lambo. You want both, both are amazing, but it comes down to personal preference and the situation.

I hear alot that rangers are badass, rangers are awesome, and I agree, but I haven't really seen why. I think once I can find out why rangers are so awesome, I can make my decision. Being the first to fight is admirable, but marines are also the first to fight (or so they say) so why not go marines? Do you reconmend anywhere I can go to (watch, read, see, hear..etc) anything about the ranger way of life? So that I can make my decision with more knowledge.

I hope I didn't come off as someone I'm not.

Thanks for the replies.

"so why not go marines"

yeah, why not?

But your right. Every Ranger on this board should present there case to you on why Rangers are "bad ass" and hope that you look favorably on us, and maybe some day, grace us with your presence in our ranks.

How do you feel that Ranger School would help you prepare for SF?

Not to burst your bubble since you know you want this 100% and all but unless I am mistaken, you are unable to get a 89D MOS (Explosive Ordnance Disposal) with an Option 40 contract. Here is a link with a listing of MOSs that the Ranger Regiment is recruiting for.

Well I am here to tell you that your "feeling" is not misleading you one bit. It is rather obvious you don't know anything by the statements you have made.
Saintspader wrote:Everyone says they are completely badass, and totally awesome, but why is what I ask? When I figure this out, I'll know my decision.

Statements like these are made quite frequently on the net along with debates "who is better or "who is the bigger badass" but these statements and debates are made by and are between inmature kids who do not know what they are talking about.

I suggest you spend the time reading and learning while visiting this site.

I am currently Koala-fying myself for that. In my defense, when I posted it Ranger McD was the last visible post.

Ranger ZoneIV, first off, thanks for the link, though at the time of the intro post I didn't know that EOD couldn't have opt 40. I've been through that site a bit now, but thank you.

Why would it help for SF? Well, its a lot harder from what I've seen (Ranger school compared to SF assessment and selection) so I believe if you can become a Ranger, you sure as hell can become a SF. Kind of like 'if I can jump out of a plane, I can do ___" kind of mentality.

Your right that I don't know enough, thats why I'm here. Personally I've seen a few Rangers who have given the time to help me and I'm extremely grateful, the others just seem to make fun of me. But this won't stop me from learning what I need to learn. Plus I asked for it =P

I'm not asking who is better SF or Rangers because they are two completely different types of SOF, and its a completely personal answer. I'm just asking why a Ranger is better than an infantry unit. Which I've come to understand why.

Thanks for the suggestion, and I've learned a lot already and continue learn with every post.

Ranger Goon, I'm sorry if I've offended you, you've taken my post the wrong way. I wasn't asking anybody, Rangers included to prove to me why they are worthy for me, quite the contrary. I was saying I want to learn why they are worthy of me, because at the time of that post, I didn't understand what exactly a Ranger did to make them so elite.

Anyways, I hope my answers have cleared up a few things with the people who have had issues with me so far. If not, send me a PM and I can further explain myself.

Just as an added note, getting picked on for anything and everything is part of the Army tradition. We dog each other out constantly. It's just part of the life.

SO GET OVER IT, and have a nice day.
